CHOICE Review
The eye is immediately drawn to the beautiful color reproductions of the 50 paintings chosen for inclusion in this work, one of several in a series from Prestel. Independent scholar Engelmann offers a nice introduction to the Impressionist movement and its artists (it is translated from German by Robert McInnes). The volume covers the years 1863-1906, and each painting gets two pages: one with commentary on the times, the subject matter, the painting, and the artist; and the other with a reproduction of the painting. Short biographies of the 18 artists represented, along with artist photographs and short bibliographies, are included. Some questions do arise, such as how these 50 paintings were chosen as the movement's "most important works." One also wonders about the rationale for the years chosen for the movement, and the key for the symbols used in the notes running across the page tops (unclear is whether an asterisk means the person listed was born that year). An introduction to the book itself, rather than just the movement, would have been very helpful, as would an index and glossary for this "reference guide." Still, the volume offers a nice, general introduction to Impressionism. Summing Up: Recommended. Lower- and upper-level undergraduates; general readers. Abstract: Fifty of the most important works from the early nineteenth through the early twentieth centuries are gorgeously reproduced, including the best of Monet, Degas, van Gogh, Renoir, Cezanne, Cassatt, Manet, Seurat, and Pisarro. Each piece is given a brief overview establishing its place in the Impressionist pantheon as well as in its artist's oeuvre. An introductory text explains the Impressionistic style, tracing the movement's development, while an appendix offers biographies of the artists.--From amazon.com
